The Power of Alternative Media: Experiences from South-Eastern Europe

Kralji ulice (Kings of the Street) is the first Slovenian newspaper on homelessness and the related issues. Through the creation of the newspaper Kings of the Street the Association for Help and Self-help for Homeless People Kings of the Street trains homeless and other groups of excluded people for better access to social resources, social integration, development of new forms of solidarity among the homeless themselves and with the wider community. In addition, Kings of the Street offers professional, cultural and artistic reflection on the homeless issues and the related topics, aims to establish an open dialogue with the public, and encourages the promotion of solidarity. This project aimed at exchanging knowledge with other organizations active in the alternative media field. The focus was to debate various social topics and through encounters empower the creators of alternative media. This initiative brought together various alternative media projects from Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia to exchange experience, discuss problems and future prospects, as well as to empower alternative media producers and vendors.
