Populism and the Web: Communicative Practices of Parties and Movements in Europe

New book about the role of the Web for right-wing populist political parties and movements across Europe edited by Mojca Pajnik and Birgit Sauer (Routledge). Analysing these groups discourses and practices of online communication it shows how social media is used to spread ideas and mobilize supporters, whilst also excluding constructed “others” such as migrants, Muslims, women or LGBT persons.

Nils Muižnieks, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, released a report following his visit to Slovenia earlier this year. The recommendations focus on human rights pertaining to migrants, the Roma community, the “erased”, and people living in poverty.

Thematic cluster “Slovenian Mainstream Media and their Coverage of the Migrant Situation” in the journal Dve domovini – Two Homelands

This thematic cluster deals comprehensively with the analysis of the media coverage of the recent migration. The empirical material that the authors of this section critically engaged with covers press clippings that included all printed and transcribed TV texts published and aired between 20 August 2015, when the “Balkan migratory route” came into existence, and 31 December 2015, when the humanitarian corridor began to close down.

Negative – documentary film about asylum seekers in Slovenia

Negative is a documentary film presenting stories of 11 asylum seekers living in Slovenia. They are from Afghanistan, Iran, Mongolia, Algeria, Syria, Georgia, Russia, Nigeria and Eritrea.  The film points to the problematic nature of the restrictive European asylum legislation, which is currently winning over the fragility of human life.

Upcoming:

We are organizing a book launch to present results of the project Comparing Croatian and Slovenian Prostitution Regimes. The event will take place in Zagreb, November 17.

The comparative research assesses commonalities and differences of prostitution policies in the two countries with the focus on eliciting experiences of sex workers, as the most important source of information in designing and implementing feasible and effective policies.
