Who owns the Slovenian media? An interactive network of media ownership

Researchers at the Peace Institute have, within the framework of the AFEMED project, set out to define and document the ownership structure of Slovenian media. The result of this research is an online interactive network that enables the identification of dominant media groups, from local conglomerates and regional media giants to politically connected media networks.

At the link below, we present the first interactive network of media ownership in Slovenia. The network enables users to examine the ownership of individual media outlets in 2022 and to explore how these entities are embedded within broader ownership structures that are increasingly characterized by the consolidation of ownership in the hands of a limited number of individuals. The tool also allows for the identification of individual companies’ profits and their primary sectors of operation, offering a visually supported representation of the Slovenian media system – one that reveals, in particular with regard to ownership linkages, a pronounced degree of concentration.

You can access the network at: https://media-ownership.mirovni-institut.si/

To enhance awareness of ownership structures and ensure continuous access to information on who owns individual media outlets and the profits they generate, we have also developed a Firefox extension that can be installed in your browser. Ownership data will be displayed each time you visit the website of a selected media outlet. The extension can be downloaded at: https://addons.mozilla.org/addon/own1/

We hope that the interactive visualizations will contribute to a deeper understanding of the Slovenian media market and serve both the general public seeking to better comprehend the flows of profit within media companies, as well as the research and journalistic communities as a resource for their investigative work.

We warmly invite all interested users to engage with and make use of the networks and data.
