Yurii Sheliazhenko – arbitrarily detained to be forcibly conscripted – a victim of cruel and humiliating treatment

Yurii Sheliazhenko – arbitrarily detained to be forcibly conscripted, a well-known conscientious objector and peace activist, was arbitrarily detained in Kyiv for more than 44 hours with the aim of forced mobilization, without access to a lawyer or contact with his family. During his detention, he was subjected to violence and degrading treatment.

Although he has now been released, he remains under threat of conscription. Organizations warn of serious human rights violations and call on the Ukrainian authorities to investigate the incident, end the persecution of conscientious objectors, stop forced mobilization, and release all imprisoned conscientious objectors.

At the Peace Institute, we actively worked for his release during his unlawful detention. We also join the undersigned organizations and continue to call for his immediate protection.
