International Conference in Girona on Anti-LGBTIQ+ Hate Crimes

International Conference in Girona on Anti-LGBTIQ+ Hate Crimes

The international conference How to improve the support system for survivors of anti-LGBTIQ+ hate crimes will take place on Thursday, November 13, in Girona. It is organized by the University of Girona through the Social Sciences Research Group, CISA.

This session marks the closing event of the ENACT research project (Enhancing the capacity of civil society organisations to support victims of anti-LGBTQI hate crimes), a study funded by the European Union and developed in collaboration with universities and organizations from Italy, Lithuania, Slovenia, Greece, and Hungary, as well as Spain. Its goal is to support civil society organizations in establishing cooperation spaces with public institutions to improve real and effective support for LGBTIQ+ victims of hate crimes.

The study, based on an intersectional approach, uses the analysis of different national realities to outline the current European context and propose measures and tools for the institutions involved. The results and their dissemination also aim to raise awareness beyond the professional sphere, through specialized training or outreach sessions such as this event.

During the conference, which will be held at the Josep Irla Auditorium in Girona, representatives from the participating universities will present the findings and conclusions of the research, which began in 2024. The event will also feature contributions from Dr. Mark Walters, professor of criminal law and criminology and expert in hate crimes, and Saul Castro Fernández, lawyer specializing in this type of crime and LGBTIQ+ rights.

Dr. Maja Ladić, the head of the ENACT project at the Peace Institute, will also be speaking at the conference.

The Director General will attend the event for the Real and Effective Equality of LGTBI+ People (Ministry of Equality), Mr. Julio del Valle de Iscar, Director General of LGBTI+ Public Policies of the Government of Catalonia, Mr. Alberto Lacasta Huelin, and the Rector of the University of Girona, Dr. Joaquim Salvi.

The activity is free and open to everyone. English-language contributions will have simultaneous translation. It will be, also, be broadcasted live via Youtube.
