Realizing solidarity in the practices of social movements

A consortium meeting of the EcsEuro research project took place in Berlin last week (December 4-7), within which we are studying the solidarity, caring and community practices of social movements on the example of ten European cities. We exchanged experiences with the course of ethnographic research in different cities, where we study initiatives in the field of migrants’ rights, housing policy and care work. We determined how movements respond to the gentrification of cities, the abolition of the public, the segregation and racialization of migration, and how they establish alternative practices and spaces of coexistence and care. Along with intensive discussions about the course of research work and conceptual challenges, we also visited the Spaces of Solidarity exhibition in Berlin’s Kreuzberg, which imagines a future of solidarity with an insight into civil society projects in the field of housing policy, health and work in Berlin.
