CharterNet – European Network for Fundamental Rights

CharterNet – European Network for Fundamental Rights aims to strengthen awareness, understanding and practical use of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union among civil society organisations, public institutions and EU citizens. The project is based on the recognition that many people are not sufficiently aware of their rights or do not know how to effectively exercise them. It therefore seeks to contribute to a stronger culture of fundamental rights and democratic participation.

The project brings together eight organisations from eight EU Member States. The partners will establish a European network for fundamental rights and organise a series of transnational and national events where representatives of civil society, public institutions, human rights defenders and diverse social groups will exchange experiences, develop recommendations and explore ways to promote the more effective implementation of the EU Charter in practice. Particular attention will be given to the inclusion of groups that are disproportionately affected by discrimination and human rights violations, including young people, women, Roma, migrants, LGBTQIA+ persons, persons with disabilities, and other marginalised communities.

The project is based on a participatory approach, combining transnational discussions with local workshops and a joint European communication campaign. Its main outcome will be the CharterNet Handbook, which will bring together recommendations, examples of good practice and practical tools to support the application of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union in the everyday work of organisations and public institutions.
