Study visit of representatives of Rwandan NGOs

In the period 22 May – 9 June 2009, Peace Institute from Ljubljana (Slovenia) hosted four representatives of Rwandan partner organisations, two from Nyamirambo Women’s Center and two from Rwanda Association of University Women – RAUW. During the visit, they met several Slovenian non-governmental organizations, among them also Amnesty International of Slovenia, African Center, Humanitas, Slovenian Filantropy and Slovenian association of university women. Rwandan visitors exchanged experience with the organisation and established contacts for further development cooperation, and they participated in the training for work with victims of domestic violence organized by the Association SOS. They actively participated in more public events, in which they presented their organisations, and particularly they wished to acquaint the Slovenian public about the Rwandan society and culture and about the situation of women in Rwanda and Africa in general. For this purpose, Peace Institute organized the “Consultations on development aid and possibilities for cooperation with Sub-Saharan Africa: Presentation of a development project in Rwanda” in the Center Europa. Together with African center, we organized a humanitarian cultural event “Rwandan evening / Igitaramo” that received significant attention in the media. During the visit, the Rwandan guests were frequently present in the Slovenian media. Thus, women’s magazine Jana published a longer reportage, and also Slovenian national television and radio carried out interviews with them.

Study visit is one of educational activities within the larger project “Empowering Nyamirambo Women’s Center” that is financially supported by the Delegation of the European Commission in Rwanda, Ministry of foreign affairs of the Republic of Slovenia and OSI East East Programme: Partnership beyond borders.
